Superb lithograph with original hand colouring of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo from the last great series on Australian ornithology, The Birds of Australia by G. Matthew’s. This series is rarer than John Gould’s work on Australian birds, with only 225 sets made. It was the last series produced using the laborious process of hand colouring of each individual lithograph.
The first sighting of the Red-tailed black Cockatoo was made on 4th July 1770 by Sydney Parkinson at Endeavour River while the ship the Endeavour was careened for repairs. A specimen was taken back to England by Joseph Banks and from this, the first scientific description was made by John Latham in 1790.

Herbert Goodchild (1873 - 1919)
Goodchild was an early twentieth century bird artist and illustrator, born in 1873 at Cumberland and died sometime around 1919. He was one of the artists who contributed to Gregory Matthew's important series, Birds of Australia, following the death of John Keulemans in 1912. His works appeared in several other publications.
