Description:

Scarce c.1790 hand coloured engraved map of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Duchy of Holstein by William Faden, Geographer to the King. Superbly embellished with a superb decorative title cartouche at top left and a scale distances at lower right.

Denmark prospered greatly in the last decades of the eighteenth century because its neutral status allowed it to trade with both sides in wartime. This map shows Denmark at the height of its prosperity, having regained Schleswig at the conclusion of the Great Northern War in 1721 and Holstein in 1773. Denmark had exchanged the German counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst for the lands owned by the House of Gottorp, resulting in a reunited Duchy of Holstein. The Baltic Sea is marked in its Latin name of ‘Sinus Codanus’. The city of Copenhagen is highlighted in red on the right of the map.

William Faden (1750 - 1836)

Faden was a cartographer and publisher who took over Thomas Jefferys's business in 1771 and held the position of Geographer to His Majesty the King and the Prince of Wales. Faden's work was of the highest standard and he was chosen to produce the very first map for the Ordnance Survey - a map of Kent in four sheets - in 1801.
