Description:
Rare and important colonial view of Windsor based on a sketch by Captain James Wallis who was known to have visited Windsor in 1815. The original sketch has noted on it, done ‘with Camera Lucida‘. The Camera Lucida, is a small optical drawing device, comprising of an upright stand and viewer that projects a ghost like image in daylight onto a sheet of paper, enabling the artist to make a tracing. The use of the Camera Lucida by Wallis, an untrained artist, enabled him to provide accurate sketches for subsequent publication and removed the necessity or temptation for an engraver to ‘work up‘ or make changes to amateur sketches, as often occurred. This is the first recorded use of the Camera Lucida in Australia which had only been patented in 1807.

Preston was an engraver sentenced to death for highway robbery and transported to the penal settlement of Newcastle for fourteen years in 1814 under the command of Captain Wallis. He engraved twelve views of NSW for Wallis and when these were subsequently published they were attributed not to Preston but Wallis.
