Famous map by one of the best known Dutch mapmakers and the first to produce an atlas with all the maps in a uniform size.
Ortelius’s modern map of Egypt and Tunis on the one sheet. The map of Egypt shows the Nile Delta extending from Alexandria the great city of learning, to the Sinai Peninsula and south along the Red Sea. Cairo is marked and so are the Pyramids. This is Ortelius’s modern map of Egypt. The lower map shows the area surrounding Tunis which was the location of the ancient city of Carthage. The city of Carthage was located on the eastern side of Lake Tunis across from the centre of Tunis. According to Roman legend it was founded in 814 BCE by Phoenician colonists.Â

Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598)
Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer, map seller and publisher. Ortelius was a leading cartographer who published the first modern atlas in 1570, Theatrum orbis terrarum in which each map was presented on a separate sheet. He initially trained as an engraver in 1547 and as an illuminator of maps. Influenced by Gerard Mercator he published his first map in 1564 and soon after published his famous atlas that changed the way maps were sold and published.
