Africae Juxta Navigationes et observationes Recentissimas Aucta, Correcta et in sua Regna et Status - Antique Map from 1740

Genuine antique
dated:

1740

Description:

Superb large scale c.18th German map of Africa by Matthaus Seutter who was apprenticed to Homann in 1697 and set up on his own account in Ausburg in 1725.

Superbly embellished with an elaborate decorative title cartouche engraved by Gottfried Rogg with native figures, pyramids and animals illustrating the bounties of the continent including a dragon. The geography shows enormous lakes in Central Africa and the information pertaining to the southern extremity of the continent is largely fictitious. The Nile is shown not only originating in the south at lakes Zaire and Zaflan, but also continuing further south, and the Abyssinian province of Amhara is shown in the kingdom of Monomotapa.

From: Seutter, Atlas novus : sive tabulae geographicae totius orbis faciem, partes, imperia, regna et provincias exhibentes, exactissima cura iuzta recentissimas observation.
