Description:

Very large rare Hydrographic chart of Australia and the islands to the immediate north on two sheets. First issued by the Hydrographic Office, 1st January 1861, this chart with corrections January 1869 and minor additions II-1874. Included in this edition are the tracks of: Burke & Wills 1861 and those of the Gregory expedition April to November 1861.

We have only traced one other example of both sheets in an Australian institutional collection. Most institutions only have the Northern sheet. The Northern Territory Library has both sheets but the Northern sheet is dated 1863 & and the Southern sheet 1865.

The chart contains all the information from the previous surveys and charting by the great names of Australian coastal exploration such as; Flinders, King, Stokes, F.J.O. Evans, Wickham, Blackwood, Stanley and Denham.

Sir Frederick John Owen Evans (1815 - 1885)

Evans was an officer of the Royal Navy. He became a distinguished hydrographer during his career and served as Hydrographer of the Navy. In 1841 Evans was appointed master of HMS Fly, and for the next five years he was employed in surveying the Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, and Torres Straits. Joseph Jukes, the geologist, was on board the Fly, and wrote an account of the expedition.
