Rare c.19th discourse by Richard Henry Major (1818-1891) of the discovery of Australia by the Portuguese. Soft bound brown wrapper, 24 pp, with the facsimile map of northern Australia from a manuscript chart in the British Library. Major’s publication which was based on his research from the British Library’s rich collection of rare Dieppe maps, manuscripts and journals in the Hakluyt Society created ongoing interest in the subject. He was fluent in Spanish which facilitated his research. This one of two printings made in Lisbon, both in 1863, The other is titled; Descobrimento da Australia pelos Portuguezes em 1601….
Richard Henry Major (1818 - 1891)
Major was a geographer and British Museum' map curator from 1844 until 1880. He was appointed keeper of the newly created department of maps and charts in the British Museum in 1867. He wrote three books on the discovery of Australia; Early voyages to Terra Australia, now called Australia, 1859. Further Facts Relating To The Early Discovery Of Australia With Supplementary Observations, 1873. The Discovery Of Australia By The Portuguese In 1601, 1863. He was also the Secretary of the Hakluyt Society from 1849 until 1858.
