Rare c.17th double Hemisphere map of the world with portraits of the most important explorers of the c.16th and early c.17th century: Magellan, Schouten, Drake, Von Noort, Cavendish and Speilbergen.

The map shows the tracks of Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten’s circumnavigation (1615-1617), which included the discovery of a passage to the south of the Straits of Magellan and the discovery of Staten Island.

Rare first edition of this famous engraved world map from the second part of Gottfried’s important compilation of narratives of voyages to the Americas.

Gotfried a German chronicler Abelin, best known by his assumed name of Gottfried, worked as a translator for the publishing house of Lucas Jennisius, Mattheus Merian and Friedrich Hulsius in Frankfurt. His Newe Welt und Americanische Historien which was published in three parts by Mattheus Merian, the son-in-law of the publisher Johann Theodor De Bry. The first part is an abridgement of the ‘histories’ of previous authors, such as Acosta, Oviedo, Herrera. The second part is an account of thirty three voyages to America from Columbus to Spilbergen and Schouten, and of the conquest of Brazil by the Dutch. The third part is a summary of the voyage of Jacob Heremite through the Americas.

Eigentliche Beschreibung der wunderbarlichen Reise/ welche ein Holländer Wilhelm schauten von Horn/ innerhalb drei Jahren/ nämlich 1615. 1616. 1617. verrichtet hat. Wie er den ganzen Erdboden vmbsegelt/ und gegen Mittag der Magellanischen Straßen eine neue in die Süder See erfunden habe. ( An authentic description of the miraculous voyage that a Dutchman, William of Horn, undertook within three years, namely 1615, 1616, and 1617. How he had sailed around the entire globe and, toward the south of the Strait of Magellan, had discovered a new one into the Southern Sea.)

Diese Reise ist eigentlich zu diesem Ende vorgenommen worden. Weil die Bewindheber/ Verleger und ganze Gesellschaft der Ost-indianischen Company von den Herrn General Staden ein sonderbar Privilegium erlanget/ daß kein Schiffer oder Kaufmann/ ohne ihr/ (This voyage was actually undertaken for this purpose. Because the wind-lifters, publishers and the entire company of the East Indian Company obtained a special privilege from General Staden, that no sailor or merchant could sail without them.)

(Without the consent of the East India Company, one should not sail to the eastern lands either around the extreme tip of Africa, called Caput Bonae Spei, or through the designated Strait of Magellan, under penalty of loss of ship and goods. Therefore, several merchants and sailors (who found themselves aggrieved by this charter of freedom) consulted among themselves to try to determine whether they could perhaps reach the Southern Seas by a different route than the two prohibited above, and from there travel to the Orient, or at least discover new lands and islands.)

Es ist aber dieser Handel erstlich angesponnen worden in der namhaften Stadt Horn in Nordholland/ da dann etliche vornehme Ratsfreunde und Bürger zusammen geschossen/ und so viel Geld zu wegen brachte/ daß sie zwei schöne Schiff erbaut/ und mit aller Notdurft versehen haben. Dieses Schiff führte neunzehn Metallene und zwölf Eiserne Sück Geschütz/ und waren 65. Mann darauf. Das kleinere Schiff war eine Fuste/ hatte den Namen Horn/ war von 55. Lasten/ hatte auf 22. (The larger ship, named Concordia or Concordia, carried 180 cargoes and was captained by an experienced seaman who had been to the East Indies three times as a ship’s captain. The ship’s chief merchant was named Jacob le Maire. This ship carried 19 metal and 12 iron pieces of artillery and had 65 men on board. The smaller ship, a fuste, was named Horn, carried 55 cargoes and had 8 metal pieces and 14 stone pieces for each of its 22 men.)

Nach dem sie nun allerdings fertig/ und diesen ihren Anschlag keinem Menschen offenbart/ sind sie den 25. Mai im Jahr Christi 1615. zu Horn abgelaufen/ den 27. desselben Monats im Texel mit gutem Wind angelanget/ Von dannen sie den 14. Juni gegen Abend abgefahren/ ihren Weg naher Pleymuth in England genommen/ folgendes den 13. Juli zwischen den beiden Jnsulen/ groß Canaria und Teneriffa durchgeschifft/ und den 15. desselben unter der Sonnewendt Zirkel des Krebses kommen. (Now that they had finished, and had revealed their plan to no one, they set sail from Horn on May 25th in the year of Christ 1615, and arrived in Texel on the 27th of the same month with a good wind. From there they set sail on June 14th towards evening, taking their route near Pleinmont in England, and then on July 13th they sailed between the two islands, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and arrived on the 15th of the same month under the solstice circle of Cancer.)
