Description:
Rare c.19th parliamentary report describing the exploration of the Wellington Valley Caves, headed by Gerard Krefft.
Small folio, 52 pp, numerous photographic and lithographic illustrations, 4 maps, one large folding.
In 1882, an exploration of the caves and rivers of New South Wales, particularly the Wellington Caves, was undertaken, with Mr. G. Krefft (curator of the Sydney Museum) and others, including Professor Owen, being involved. The exploration led to the discovery of the bones of an immense Echidna, and a large Struthian bird allied to the Emu, among other newly discovered animals, which were added to the Museum. This expedition, funded by Parliament, aimed to provide a thorough exploration of the caves and was seen as a “desideratum” by Professor Owen, the Colonial Secretary and others.
