Description:

First edition (dated MDCCLXII/1762) of Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville’s large scale hand coloured map of Greece.

The map extends south to the island of Cythera showing the historical cities and regions with the surrounding islands. In the lower right corner are the islands of Melos, Ananes and Cimolus. In the upper right is part of Macedonia. In the upper left is a special inset showing details of Macedonia and the northern part of Greece. Decorative features include a title cartouche with cupids and coloured administrative borders.

This edition is identified by the lack of the inset of Macedonia which appears at lower left in later editions.

Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 - 1782)

D'Anville was a French cartographer of great repute. Following the death of De Lisle, D'Anville continued the line of progressive French cartographers which had begun with Nicolas Sanson in the previous century. A child prodigy, he is said to have designed his first map at the age of fifteen and in his long distinguished career he produced a large number of elegantly engraved maps, noted for their scholarship and accuracy. Having exacting standards soon brought him international recognition as the finest cartographer of his time.
