Description:
Large c.19th engraved wall map of the world on Mercator’s projection, printed in original outline colour, dissected and mounted on linen as issued, folding within publisher’s cloth case.
Published by the renowned geographical institute of Justus Perthes in Gotha, this twelfth edition represents a complete revision of Berghaus’s celebrated world chart, undertaken after his death by Herman Habenicht and Bruno Domass. Reflecting the latest cartographic and geographical knowledge of the late nineteenth century, it incorporates updated political boundaries, oceanic routes, and recent discoveries. A fine example of late nineteenth-century German scientific cartography, notable for its precision, clarity, and high production standards characteristic of the Perthes publishing house.
Hermann Berghaus (1828 - 1890)
Berghaus was a German cartographer. For most of his working life he was a cartographer in the Geographical Institute of Justus Perthes at Gotha. His best known work is a chart of the world (1863) which went through at least 11 editions. He also prepared a Physikalische Wandkarte von Afrika (Physical wall map of Africa, 1881).
