Rare, early c.19th colour woodblock of Kochi (Bartail flathead), and nasu (eggplant) by one of the most famous Japanese Ukiyo-e artists, Utagawa Hiroshige.

Inscription translation: The east winds of spring / arrive, true to form, with shoals / of flathead fish, / but by summer, to be sure, / you’ll find no trace of either. Yoshigaki Toshiji Flathead fish grow up / under wildly pounding waves, / so perhaps that is / why their heads no appear / completely squashed and flattened. Magaki Harutomo (trans. Alfred Haft)
