Description:

Rare and decorative Italian map of Tonga by Cassine based Cook’s account of the islands.

Cook visited the ilsnads  2-8 October 1773 and then again 26-29 June 1774 October after which the ships became separated and were never to meet again.

After leaving Raiatea (Society Islands) on 18 September 1773 Cook directed his course towards Amsterdam Island (Tongatapu), discovered by Tasman in 1643, intending to verify Tasman’s charting against his own charts. The ships stayed for three days, thoroughly enjoying the reception they had received and called the group the Friendly Islands. On his second visit he headed for Nomuka, the largest island of the south central group of Tonga.

From Cassini’s atlas, Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale Delineato Sulle Ultime Osservazione.

Mapmaker:

Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745-1824)
Cassini was a Rome based Italian globe maker, geographer, engraver, and
cartographer active in the later part of the 18th and early 19th
century. Not to be confused with the unrelated well known French
cartographic family of the same name, Cassini is best known as a globe
maker and is considered the last of the great 18th century globe
makers.. Unlike many map and atlas publishers of the period, Cassini did
all of his own engraving work.
