Description:

Superb c.18th double hemisphere French world map by Jean-Baptiste-Louis Clouet (1730 – 1790) and published by Louis-Joseph Mondhare (1734 – 1799).

The map is embellished with a facade of a building with a large pediment colonade at top, placed above the two spheres, the title is set within a Rococo style panel and at bottom there are a four figures amongst numerous objects.

The tracks of a number of important voyages of exporation are show, including those of Cook’s second and third voyages but curiously the tracks and discoveries of his first voyage are not shown. Consequently Australia and New Zealand are shown with only Abel Tasman’s discoveries and those of other Dutch voyages prior to Cook.

.Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) first crossing of the Pacific and the Magellan Straits.
.Álvaro de Mendaña (1542-1595) two of the earliest recorded expeditions across the Pacific Ocean in 1567 and 1595.
.Pedro Fernandes de Queirós (1563-1614) 1605–1606 expedition that crossed the Pacific in search of Terra Australis.
Jacob Le Maire (1585-1616) circumnavigated the world in 1615 and 1616
.Abel  Tasman two voyages 1742-44 which resulted in the charting of the south west coast of Western Australia, the southern portion of Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and the a portion of the west coast of New Zealand.
.Louis Antoine de Bougainville 1766-1769 Bougainville’s descriptions of his voyage created the concept of the noble savage, influencing the utopian thoughts of philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau before the advent of the French Revolution.
.Edmond Halley (1656-1742) made extensive observations on terrestrial magnetism.
.Cook 2nd Voyage  1772-1775  discovery of a number of Pacific Islands and sailing further south than any other explorer.

Jean-Baptiste-Louis Clouet (1730 - 1790)

C.18th French cartographer an eminent member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Rouen. He began publishing geographical atlases such as Géographie moderne in collaboration with Louis Joseph Mondhare, publisher on rue Saint-Jacques in Paris. In 1776, he produced a remarkable set of wall maps depicting the four continents: Africa, America, Asia and Europe. Each map was accompanied by titles in French and Spanish, and surrounded by decorative scenes illustrating various aspects of each continent. The Map of Africa was divided into its principal states, based on the astronomical observations of the Académie des Sciences and the most recent memoirs. Similarly, the maps of America, Asia and Europe were divided into their principal countries.
