Description:

Superb double hemisphere world map, with the title cartouche elaborately surrounded by allegorical figures representing the four continents. Europe is portrayed as a land of abundance while Africa is depicted with a lion, Asia the seat of Religion carries a smoking censer while America is depicted as a robed female with child. Australia and New Zealand are shown according to the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his two voyages although only his first voyage (1742) tracks are shown. America’s north west coast is shown uncharted. The map includes numerous tracks of voyages of exploration. The de Lisle family of map makers were a major influence on French C18th cartography. Guillaume was said to have produced his first map at the age of nine and elected as a member of the Academie Royaledes Sciences at 27. Later he was appointed to the highest honour as ‘Premier Geographe du Roi’.

Guillaume de L'Isle (1675 - 1726)

L'Isle was the leading French cartographer of the C18th and renowned for the accuracy of his maps. He studied under Jean Cassini and from an early age showed his talent. At the age of 27 Delisle was admitted to the Academie Royale des Sciences and by 1718 he had been made the Royal Geographer. His maps reflect his scientific approach to map making by including the most up to date cartographic information as well as the use of new astronomical information. Where he was unable to verify information conclusively, he would note the fact on his maps.
