Description:

Colonial engraving of Murrurundi, Hunter Valley.

Settlement in the area began in the 1820s, and the town was officially formed by the New South Wales government in 1840. During the same year, a nearby landowner named Thomas Haydon founded a separate private township known as Haydonton. According to the 1846 census, Murrurundi had a population of 52, whereas Haydonton had a total of 117 residents. Eventually, in 1913, the two adjacent settlements were combined to form the present-day town of Murrurundi.
