Description:

On the western entrance of the valley in with Nablous stands, Roberts has depicted an interesting cluster of travellers. In the middle plain of the picture sits Nablous, one of the oldest and most interesting cities in Palestine. The stream which is shown in the foreground irrigrates the valley which produces an array of produce including olives, figs, mulberry, pomegaranate and oranges, is shown as a thick grove of trees in the image. Behind the city sits Mt Gerizim, which is the sacred hill of the Samaritans. The history of Nabolous is sited in both the Old and New Testaments. Overall the image is one of granduer.

David Roberts (1796 - 1864)

Roberts was initially apprenticed as a house painter and then became a scene painter in theatres. Exhibiting from 1824 his fame came after publication of his most famous work, Egypt & the Holy Land, one of the most important records of these countries famous places and monuments.
