Description:
Very rare early etching of the Royal Victoria Theatre which was the first large theatre Sydney. It opened in 1838 presenting operas, plays and pantomimes.
The theatre was built by Joseph Wyatt a haberdasher, who had been a lessee of the first theatre in Sydney, the Theatre Royal, since 1835, and the sole lessee since 1836. In that year he planned another larger theatre. The building was designed by Henry Robertson and the foundation stone was laid on 7 September 1836. The new theatre, in Pitt Street, opened on 26 March 1838, with a performance of Shakespeare’s Othello. The theatre had a three storey Georgian style façade with the front section incorporating a hotel. The interior was in the Regency style. John Black Carmichael (1811 - 1857)
Carmichael was a painter, etcher, art teacher and engraver. Despite being 'deaf and dumb', a distinguishing handicap often mentioned in relation to his work, Carmichael was nevertheless regarded as one of the most competent engravers in Sydney. He is also notable for having been one of the earliest free emigrant artists to pursue a lifelong professional career in New South Wales.
