Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (1646-1709) unexpectedly became a shogun on the death of his brother Ietsuna and was noted for his efforts to clean up government corruption and public morals. Here he is shown boating in the Fukiage pond garden of Edo Castle with Lady Osame. Inset Tsunayoshi’s advisor Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu (1658-1714) who tried to corrupt the shogun.
