Description:
Very detailed and scarce map of the Western Australian goldfields marked in pink and noting information on inland exploration with names and dates of discoveries. Two insets, one of the northern continuation of the map and one of the environs of Perth at lower right. Also included is steamer routes and railways. This map was made to provide information on the great interest created by the discovery of gold in Kalgoorlie which caused the Western Australian population to double from about 50,000 in the years between 1891 to 1895.
Population in Western Australia in 1891 was 49,782. By 1895 it had doubled to 100,515, and by 1901 was 184,124

George Philip II (1823-1902)
George Philip II was the son of George Philip (1799-1882) who was a London geographical publisher, globe maker, and founder of the firm George Philip & Son. He started business in 1834 in Liverpool and from about 1848 he traded as “George Philip & Son” with his son and successor Philip retired 1 July 1879 and the business was continued by his son and his nephew.
