Description:
“25,937 in Coate’s Herd Book, bred by Mr. Adam Dugdale, of Burnley, Lanca shire, and imported to the colony by his present owner, Mr. Richard Morton, two years and a half ago. Duke of Brunswick is now three years and eight months old, and since his introduction to the colony has been used in the select herd of pure bred and highly pedigreed cows at Mount Derrimut. He was purchased in England when eleven months old for his present owner. His sire was 2nd Duke of Claro (21,576) dam Lady Fortunate by 2nd Duke of Wharfdale (19,649). Both these bulls were bred by Capt. Gunterfrom Bate’s celebrated Duchess family, two of which he (Capt. Gunter) sold for the sum of 2500 guineas hist July. When the Duch esses were last exhibited, by Capt. Gunter, viz. at the Royal Sooiety’s Show in 1861, they carried, off three first prizes out of the four offered by the Society for short-horn cows and heifers. The Duke of Brunswiok carried off seven prizes before leaving England, and his dam has been the winner of more than twenty prizes.

Biography:
Thomas Selby Cousins (1840-1897)
Cartoonist, illustrator, painter, and engraver son of the engraver Henry Cousins and nephew of the engraver Samuel Cousins.He emigrated for health reasons to New Zealand in 1863-64 . He moved to Melbourne in 1867 found work as an illustrator and cartoonist. After sometime he returned to Christchurch and worked primarily as a portrait painter.
