Description:

A rare, complete set of the accounts of Captain Cook’s three voyages, bound in seven octavo volumes. With a folding map of the world showing the tracks of the three voyages and twenty five aquatint views.

Published London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1821, seven volumes, illustrated with maps and aquatint prints.

This 1821 edition brings together in compact form the monumental narratives originally published by order of the Admiralty between 1773 and 1784, edited by John Hawkesworth, James Cook himself, and James King. The engraved plates depicting Pacific landscapes, native inhabitants, botanical specimens, and maritime scenes are reduced from the large folio atlases that accompanied the first editions, offering a finely executed yet more accessible version of these foundational works.

As a complete seven-volume set, this Longman edition constitutes one of the most desirable nineteenth-century collected formats of Cook’s voyages, preserving the full text and principal illustrations of the original official publications while presenting them in a form suited for private libraries and scholarly reference.

A very handsome, tight set in contemporary half calf,  marbled boards, with raised gilded bands, titles in red panels and volume numbers in dark green panels.

James Cook (1728 - 1779)

Cook was the most important navigator of the Age of Enlightenment, a period that saw the mystery of the Southland resolved, the discovery of New Zealand, Hawaii, numerous Pacific Islands and confirmation that a Northwest Passage did not exist. Cook was born in Yorkshire, England, the son of a Scottish labourer and apprenticeship for three years under John Walker, a Quaker coal-shipper of Whitby. In 1755 Walker offered him a command, but instead Cook joined HMS Eagle and within a month was master's mate. After two years on the Channel service, he was promoted master of the Pembroke, and in 1758 crossed the Atlantic in her and took part in the siege of Louisburg and the survey of the St Lawrence River that led to the capture of Quebec. Returning to England in 1762 he married Elizabeth Batts (1742-1832?) of Shadwell, whom he was to rarely see in the ensuing years at sea. Cook then famously commanded three voyages that ended with his death on the island of Hawaii on 14 February 1779.
