The series, "Shiki no hana" meaning, "Flowers of the Four Seasons", was initially started by the artist Sakai Hoitsu 1761-1828 who served in the Imperial court some 100 years prior to it being finally printed. He painted from living specimens and was assisted by Suzuki Sonoichi. On Sakai’s death, the series was continued and finished by Nakano Sonoaki 1833-1892.
