Scarce late c.18th engraved French plate depicting the encounter of Commodore John Byron with the Patagonian natives during his voyage to the South Seas in 1764–66 on the Dolphin.
The scene illustrates Byron’s celebrated meeting with the so-called “Patagons” on the coast of Patagonia, an episode that contributed to the enduring European fascination with the supposed giant inhabitants of the region.

Vice Admiral The Hon. John Byron, RN (1723 - 1786)
Vice Admiral The Hon. John Byron, RN (1723-1786) was a Royal Navy officer, nicknamed Foul-weather Jack because of his frequent encounters with bad weather at sea. He sailed with George Anson as a midshipman, on his voyage around the world and circumnavigated the world commodore with his own squadron in 1764-1766. He rose to Vice Admiral of the White before his death in 1786.
