Beautifully designed bookplate by James Shaw for the famous pioneering bookseller and publisher, James Robert Tyrrell (1875–1961). The composition contains three aborigines, the upper figure is holding what appears to be a boomerang over his shoulder while one of the two below is starting a fire. Tyrrell had publish the same year as this bookplate, a collection of aboriginal place names.

Commercial gallery director, Shaw was one of the most prominent members of the Sydney art scene during the early boom period in Australian visual art following the end of the First World War. He was also a skilled printmaker who took a leading role in establishing the nation’s first etching society.
