Superb lithograph with original hand colouring of Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo from the last great series on Australian ornithology, The Birds of Australia by G. Matthew’s.

This series is rarer than John Gould’s work on Australian birds, with only 225 sets made. It was the last series produced using the laborious process of hand colouring of each individual lithograph.

Herbert Goodchild (1873 - 1919)

Goodchild was an early twentieth century bird artist and illustrator, born in 1873 at Cumberland and died sometime around 1919. He was one of the artists who contributed to Gregory Matthew's important series, Birds of Australia, following the death of John Keulemans in 1912. His works appeared in several other publications.
