C.19th lithographed portrait of Sir James Martin, KCB, QC (1820-1886), three times Premier of New South Wales and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales from 1873 to 1886.
Martin retired from Parliament in November 1873 and was named to the vacant position of Chief Justice of the New South Wales Supreme Court. He held the post for 13 years, despite considerable ill health in later life.
