Superb c.19th lithograph of John Thomas’s house, who had been chief Methodist missionary on Tonga during Dumont d’Urville’s previous visit in 1827.

Dumont D’Urville’s in the ships, l’Astrolabe and Zélée enroute from Samoa in October 1838 stayed for a week at Vava’u Island. While there, he became reacquainted with John Thomas, who had been chief Methodist missionary on Tonga during d’Urville’s previous visit in 1827.
