The publishing company A&C Black was founded in 1807 by brothers Adam and Charles Black. Originally established in Edinburgh in 1889 then subsequently moved to Soho Square in London. They published a variety of significant works. Their atlases included Black’s Atlas of North America 1854, Atlas of Australia Including the Goldfields’ (1853), leading onto the most complete collection of finely engraved country and region maps in Black’s General Atlas of the World, first published in 1879.
