Before becoming Surveyor General, King had a long career as an explorer and surveyor, including his work on the Eastern Goldfields and his role as the first Mining Surveyor there. The name of a lake in Western Australia, Lake King, was given in his honour. He was the Surveyor General of Western Australia from 1918 to 1923.
