Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1747-1804) was a priest in the Rouergue and professor at the central school of Rhodes. He contributed studies on cetaceans, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects to the Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique. Bonnaterre and is credited with identifying about 25 new species of fish, and assembled illustrations of about 400 in his encyclopedia work. He used previous studies by Bloch (1784-1788), of Gouan (1770), Broussonet (1782), Pennant (1767) and others.
