Major was a geographer and British Museum’ map curator from 1844 until 1880. He was appointed keeper of the newly created department of maps and charts in the British Museum in 1867. He wrote three books on the discovery of Australia; Early voyages to Terra Australia, now called Australia, 1859. Further Facts Relating To The Early Discovery Of Australia With Supplementary Observations, 1873. The Discovery Of Australia By The Portuguese In 1601, 1863. He was also the Secretary of the Hakluyt Society from 1849 until 1858.
