Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1790 - 1868)

Mitchell was born in Connecticut and worked as a teacher before turning to publishing geography textbooks and maps. He became involved in geography after teaching and saw an opportunity to publish accurate and informative maps. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in C1829. He was in Philadelphia when he founded his company which was taken over by his son, S. Augustus Mitchell in 1860.
