Early European maps of Korea often depicted the peninsula inaccurately, sometimes as an island, reflecting limited first-hand knowledge. Over time, increased contact through trade, diplomacy and exploration led to more accurate representations.
Cartographers such as d’Anville and later 19th-century mapmakers helped clarify Korea’s geography, coastline and political boundaries. Antique maps of Korea illustrate the gradual correction of geographic misconceptions and the region’s growing strategic importance.
