Antique Maps of Borneo and Northern Southeast Asia

Maps of Borneo document European engagement with one of Southeast Asia’s largest and most resource-rich islands. Early cartography reflects limited coastal knowledge, while later maps show increased detail following Dutch and British colonial involvement, particularly in British Borneo, Brunei and Sarawak.

Produced by Dutch VOC cartographers, British surveyors and 19th-century atlas publishers, these maps chart rivers, ports and trading centres critical to regional commerce. Original antique maps of Borneo are valued for their association with maritime trade, colonial history and the gradual mapping of Southeast Asia’s interior.
