Antique maps of Indochina document European engagement with mainland Southeast Asia, encompassing present-day Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Early maps were often compiled from missionary accounts, merchant reports and coastal reconnaissance, while later examples reflect systematic French colonial surveys of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Cartographers such as d’Anville, Bellin and later French military and hydrographic surveyors contributed to increasingly accurate representations of river systems, ports and political divisions. These maps are important records of regional trade, colonial expansion and the evolving European understanding of Southeast Asia.
