Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria

Original plates from the Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria, documenting Australian fauna through early scientific illustration.

Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria

This collection comprises original antique plates from the Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria, a landmark scientific publication produced in the late 19th century under the direction of Frederick McCoy. The work was among the earliest systematic attempts to document the animals of Victoria and southern Australia.

The plates combine scientific accuracy with skilled illustration, depicting mammals, birds, reptiles and other fauna in a manner intended for study and reference. Issued in parts over many years, the Prodromus reflects both the challenges and ambitions of early Australian scientific publishing.

Original plates from this work are valued for their rarity, scholarly importance and their role in the visual documentation of Australia’s natural history.
