Description:

Scarce c.18th map of Asia focusing on the East Indies by Edward Wells based on Nicholas de Fer’s map.

The map extends from Iran to the Philippines and south to Timor. An elaborate title at lower left contains a dedication to His Highness William the Duke of Gloucester and a scale of Miles is placed below. The Duke of Gloucester was attending Oxford where Wells was a teacher of mathematics and geography. Wells included this map of the East Indies in the second edition of his atlas, A New Sett of Maps of Antient and Present Geography, published in 1701 which is identified by the addition of the number ’30’ on the lower section of the title surround.

From Wells, A New Sett of Maps of Antient and Present Geography
