Rare engraving from the official British Admiralty sanctioned edition of the accounts of Cook’s first voyage. All other later copies made of this image by other publishers were unauthorised, usually smaller and inferior in quality.

View of the inside of a house showing in detail the construction methods used. The figures in the dance have been rendered in a classical romantic style by Giovanne Battista Cipriani.

Giovanni Battista Cipriani RA (1727 - 1785)

Cipriani was an Italian painter and engraver who lived in England from 1755 and the first Neo Classical painter in Britain. Cipriani was a founder member (1768) of the Royal Academy, and designed its diploma, which was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi. Much of his work consisted of designs for prints, many of which were engraved by his friend Francesco Bartolozzi. His works had an enormous influence on c.18th English artistic taste.
