Description:

Early issue of Thomson’s map of the Atlantic Ocean with the title panel at lower left and with ‘The Gulf Stream According to Governor Pownall’ shown. Thomas Pownall, was one of the most successful British colonial administrators, instigated several important surveying and scientific projects during his tenure in America. In the course of numerous Atlantic crossings, he observed the actions of the Gulf Stream. The tracks of Admiral Nelson in pursuit of the French Fleet to the West Indies and back to the famous Battle of Trafalgar, 1805, are also marked.

Thomson’s maps are often incorrectly dated as they often show a publication date of 1814 but were issued as Thomson’s New General Atlas, which was first issued in 1817.

John Thomson (1804 - 1837)

Thomson was a Scottish cartographer, publisher and bookbinder active in Edinburgh during the early part of the 19th century. Thomson is generally one of the leading masters of the Edinburgh school of cartography which flourished from roughly 1800 to 1830. Thomson & his contemporaries (Pinkerton & Cary) redefined European cartography by abandoning typical 18th century decorative elements such as elaborate title cartouches and fantastic beasts in favor of detail and accuracy. Thomson's principle works include the Thomson's New General Atlas, published from 1817 to 1821.
