Description:
Rare, early c.19th engraved portrait of the well known aboriginal, Woollarawarre Bennelong (1764-1813) a senior man of the Eora people of the Port Jackson area who belonged to the Wangal clan of the south side of Parramatta River.
Bennelong was captured in 1789 by orders of Governor Phillip and brought to Sydney Cove. He soon adapted to life with the Governor and even accompanied Phillip in 1792 to England where he was presented to King George III. Bennelong Point is named after him. He had escaped after three months but later returned, keeping in contact with Phillip. In 1790, Bennelong asked Phillip to build him a hut on what became known as Bennelong Point, now the site of the Sydney Opera House.
