Scarce c.18th French edition of Byron’s map centred around locations in Chile, specifically Island Bay and Providencia Cape.

The map is frequently, though incorrectly, attributed to James Cook, a misconception arising from its inclusion in John Hawkesworth’s, Relation des voyages entrepris par ordre de Sa Majesté Britannique actuellement régnante, the authoritative French edition of the official narratives of four voyages of exploration; Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Cook.

Vice Admiral The Hon. John Byron, RN (1723 - 1786)

Vice Admiral The Hon. John Byron, RN (1723-1786) was a Royal Navy officer, nicknamed Foul-weather Jack because of his frequent encounters with bad weather at sea. He sailed with George Anson as a midshipman, on his voyage around the world and circumnavigated the world commodore with his own squadron in 1764-1766. He rose to Vice Admiral of the White before his death in 1786.
