Description:
A finely engraved c.18th hand coloured map of the Arabian Peninsula, published by the Venetian printer and cartographer Giovambattista Albrizzi. The map presents a European understanding of Arabia, delineating its principal regions, Arabia Deserta, Arabia Felix, and Arabia Petrea, together with major trade centres, coastal settlements, and interior oases. The Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Aden are rendered with particular clarity, reflecting the commercial and diplomatic interests that animated Venetian and wider European engagement with the region.
From: Albrizzi, Atlante Novissimo del Sigr. Guglielmo de L’Isle, Venezia. (volume Primo MDCCXL-1740)
Giovambattista Albrizzi (1698 - 1777)
Albrizzi was a publisher, patron, collector and one of the great figures of eighteenth-century Venetian intellectual and cultural life. Although Venice had been the centre of the European map trade during the sixteenth century, its importance was greatly diminished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as Dutch and German publishers became increasingly dominant.
