Description:

Scarce, c.19th French hand coloured lithographic map of the Indian Ocean (“Mer des Indes”) and surrounding lands (East Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia).

An inset at lower left depicts: “Entrée du Canal” (Suez canal entrance) refers to the recently inaugrated (1869) Suez Canal connecting the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.

Many maps printed by Goyer at this address were sold through the Librairie Militaire de J. Dumaine, which was also located in the Passage Dauphine. This firm was the official seller for the Dépôt de la Guerre (War Office) and frequently published maps for the French military and government.
