Description:

First edition of Robert Morden’s map of Cumberland.

Morden is best known for this series of English county maps based on Camden’s “Britannia” which he first published in 1695. These maps were based on new information supplied by the gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. All the maps feature a decorative cartouche and display numerous place names.

Robert Morden (1650 - 1703)

Morden was an English mapmaker and publisher. Little is known of him other than between 1675 and 1703 he operated under the sign of the Atlas in Cornhill and New Cheapside. His most important maps were the ones of British counties which for the first time provided information directly sourced by the landowners within each county. He also produced a number of important maps of America.
