Scarce c.18th hand coloured engraved map of the Holy Land by Daniel Stoopendaal from the 1714 edition of the Keur family Bible.

The map extends from the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, depicting numerous Biblical sites, including the wanderings of the Children of Israel and the Garden of Eden. Banner style title with vignettes in the four corners from Genesis: the creation of Adam & Eve, Paradise, Eve offering Adam the apple, and the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. At bottom center is a large scene of Noah’s Ark at the beginning of the Great Flood.

The first Keur family bible was issued in 1666, the last in 1756. Three generations of Keur’s worked on it: the brothers Hendrik and Jacob, Jacob’s son Pieter and Pieter’s two sons Jacob and Hendrik.

Daniel Stoopendaal (1672 - 1726)

Dutch engraver and mapmaker active in Amsterdam during the early part of the 17th century. He is best known for his engravings of Nicholas Visscher maps.
