Description:

Distribution: WA, NT, QLD & New Guinea. Tropical freshwater wetlands from the Kimberleys WA to Mary River QLD.

First described by Horsefield 1824.
This image is from the last great bird series, The Birds of Australia by G. Matthews and is rarer than John Gould’s work on Australian birds, with only 225 sets done. It was the last series produced to use hand colouring rather than colour printed lithography for the illustrations.  Rare.

Herbert Goodchild (1873 - 1919)

Goodchild was an early twentieth century bird artist and illustrator, born in 1873 at Cumberland and died sometime around 1919. He was one of the artists who contributed to Gregory Matthew's important series, Birds of Australia, following the death of John Keulemans in 1912. His works appeared in several other publications.
