Description:
Superb c.18th hand coloured engraved pair of globes, surrounded by a very ornate frame border design with putti and cartographic tools, by Louis Brion De La Tour (fl 1756-1803).
On either side are panels of text. Australia is shown joined to New Guinea and the New Hebrides, as original depicted the French Royal Geographer, Nicholas Bellin in 1753. This representation of the Australian landmass significantly influenced the way the continent was depicted in almost all maps produced prior to the publication of James Cook’s discoveries of the east coast in 1773.
Louis Brion De La Tour (1756 - 1803)
Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1803) was a French cartographer and geographer active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and produced a number of important maps and atlases, many of which were used in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He is considered one of the most important French cartographers of his time.
