Description:

Scarce late c.18th engraved French plate depicting the encounter of Commodore John Byron with the Patagonian natives during his voyage to the South Seas in 1764–66 on the Dolphin.

The scene illustrates Byron’s celebrated meeting with the so-called “Patagons” on the coast of Patagonia, an episode that contributed to the enduring European fascination with the supposed giant inhabitants of the region.
