Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827 - 1884)
American map publisher, renowned for his significant contributions to cartography between 1856 and the mid-1880s. Born in humble circumstances in Vermont, Johnson received a rudimentary education and initially pursued a career as a teacher before relocating to Richmond, Virginia. He subsequently assumed leadership of the New York-based publishing firm A.J. Johnson & Co., which became celebrated for producing the Johnson’s Family Atlas. Johnson’s professional trajectory involved fruitful collaborations with other publishers, such as D. Griffing Johnson and Ross Browning, and he inherited the map plates of J.H. Colton, further cementing his position in the field. His publishing house ultimately evolved into Johnson & Ward. The firm’s atlases are especially esteemed for their meticulous hand colouring and distinctive border designs, which became characteristic of Johnson’s output. During the 1880s, Johnson expanded his repertoire to include wall maps, pocket maps, and the Cyclopedia. Of particular significance are Johnson’s atlases of the American West, which have become highly coveted by collectors and scholars alike. His work remains a pivotal reference point in the history of American cartography, valued not only for its artistic quality but also for its historical and geographical insights.
